The food is, of course, incredible. Plus, thanks to high-speed trains, you can get to Florence in 40 minutes, Rome in about 2 hours, and Venice in just over an hour

It is heaven, as I can go to the beach from March to November, and the weather is perfect. I get the freshest produce from the local farms and go explore ancient ruins on weekends. I feel privileged to be here, as the cost of living is very high for the local people.
Summers are hard, though; they are very hot and humid. Then I visit friends and family back home in Finland.

I’ve lived in DC for 23 years, coming here for college and never leaving. Like the saying about one’s parents, I feel like I can talk smack about my city (the tourists! the housing insanity! the mayor’s capitulation! the lack of representation!) but once others speak poorly of it, I jump in immediately to defend it. DC is the public servants who want you to have clean water, and the NGO workers who are fighting for food deliveries in Sudan. DC is cherry blossoms and a million 10Ks. DC is splash parks in the summer and sledding on the Hill in the winter. DC is excellent public transportation and easily walkable to anything you need. DC is so, so, so many independent bookstores and Little Free Libraries on every corner.

Most importantly, DC is the block I live on, where I know every single one of my neighbors. Where my kids run wild with a group of children ranging from the barely-walking to middle schoolers on the edge of being too cool. Where we throw open our back door gates and host alley rallys, and start planning the block party six months in advance. Where of the ten of us who worked for the federal government at this time last year, only one is still employed – and yet somehow we are all still trying to find (unpaid) ways to make the world better.

Because of the regime, I’m realizing that to provide for my family, we may need to leave our home. There are so many cruelties the regime has inflicted, and this is a small one in comparison. But it is heartbreaking nonetheless.

Rarely anything big ever happens. The same thing each week. The refreshing after rain weather. Green sceneries all around us since we’re in a valley!

Yes! I was looking for the DC love. DC is an amazing place. I live in Northern VA, however I call it all home. I’ve been here 17 years and I love it here! I’m originally from SC, but no matter where I travel to in the world, the DC area is home.
